This looks very promising and I gotnhave it when it comes out unless someone else has anything better. The video is ok, but the info on their website is more detailed. http://www.icall.com/iphone/
We are part of the Apple iPhone developer program. This is not an application for you naughty jail breakers ;-)
iCall for the iPhone? It's already working and is coming soon to your iPhone. We think you'll find it as revolutionary as we do.
Make and receive calls over WiFi
Transfer inbound calls from a regular cell call to WiFi instantly and seamlessly - save your expensive minutes
Access your same address book
Customize your voicemail options
We are huge Apple fans and plan to release a version of iCall for OS X, but we don't have enough developers. Yes we are hiring. Please visit our jobs page. We'll even pay for you to move to Greenwich, CT.
Yeah, it's more like a toy or a game in a sense but still cool! It's probably going to be my 1st purchase from the App store and my favorite for a long time to come! :D
Here's a link to the developer's website:
Don't have the hardware? Gene sez: http://www.yazsoft.com/
Pickup a 2 for one copy of Speed Download while you're at it and get 3 extra iPhone entries! No purchase required and it's open to everyone worldwide! :D
"Introducing Naked Light. Non-destructive image editing. Node-based compositing. Live filters. High-end tools. And infinite resolution. It's image editing, re-invented."
Barely in Beta it looks promising as long as they're not pulling a Steven Greer cough! cough! I mean, eh well you know what I mean! :D I wonder if this has potential if nothing else?

There was an episode a while back where David had mentioned 2 programs and I believe he referred to them as his "Secret Weapons". :D I hope he won't have to kill me after I repeat them ;) but one of them was GroBoto. It's a wild and crazy graphics program and I had to get it after I heard David's comments.

In David's on words in his MacLife review:
"While the vast majority of 3D software tends to be complex, intimidating and expensive, GroBoto is a one-of-a-kind offering, a completely original tool for instantly whipping up outrageous and intricate creations that would require serious effort with any other 3D package. It’s inexpensive, fun, and downright addictive."

I wonder if we could get one of the creators of this kick arse software to be a guest and even have David there to show his appreciation of it and to ask a few interesting questions?
Here's a link to David's review in MacLife:
More? Probably not up to David's standards but you'll get the idea! ;)

I wonder who would buy one or two perhaps? ;) Personally, I might if it wasn't overpriced like the Tesla Roadster. For that type of vehicle to work it needs the press and attention of a high end sports car such as the Tesla but made for the masses like a Smart Car perhaps, at a down to earth price too. I've often told a good friend of mine as a joke but not exactly :D that Apple should consider, at least, a branch or division of an all encompassing design studio headed by Mr. Ives. I'm sure they could fix, yeah really fix lots of design errors, blunders and muckups of virtually anything! With the exception of Vista maybe. ;) Cars or transportation in general would be a high profile market right now if it was eco-friendly, different and very Apple but not too much and priced right. They'd have another hit on their hands! :)

That's my thinking and even more so after I listened to last night's episode of The Tech Night Owl Live. I'm sure I'm not the first one to think so but when you take a typical Windows user give them iTunes for free and snag them with a MobileMe account? Hmm, many have said that the Web 2.0 apps on MobileMe look an awful lot like Mac apps, slick, speedy, etc., almost identical. That might be another way to produce another Halo effect or just make the Halo much larger in scope. From what I understand you don't actually have to buy the MM service if you have access to a friend or family's.
Hmm, the plot thickens! Is the trend getting stronger? I believe so and it's easy to see: iTunes, iPods, Intel Macs able to run Windows, iPhones, Exchange Support on the iPhone for the enterprise and in Snow Leopard. Apple is beginning to be more of a friend of M$ but I wonder what's that old saying? "Keep your friends close but your enemies closer?"

1 = Dev Design/Code Pane
2 = Dev Tools
3 = Test Browsers
4 = Email/IM/media player(usually tuned to the paracast archives)
Do I have this expandability for the Mac? I see that on the back of my iMac I have a secondary video out. Is this all that is available?
Thanks

Let me start by saying that I know next to nothing about Mac server class systems and OS. I have recently purchased a few iMacs to do compatability testing for a software package. Needles to say, I was impressed with just about everything. Until this point I have been a UNIX and Windows guy. Now that the base architecture for OSX is UNIX I am wanting to know more. With that in mind...

I am thinking of moving some things off of MSSQL and on to mySQL and need to get this going in a clustered environment. mySQL cluster does not work on Microsoft server environments (performance concerns I'm told). MSSQL licensing is outragous and the OS is multiple layers of security swiss cheese since NT so moving away from this headache is OK with me. I am very comfortable with Linux, HPUX, FreeBSD and Sun. Most of my hardware is HP, Compaq, or IBM.

I want to know if anyone has used mySQL cluster on Mac hardware and OS. Also, I have 2 EMC SAN's and want to make sure there are no difficulties in configuring mySQL cluster or the Mac OS to store the database files and logs on a remote SAN. I see that Mac offers a SAN product, but I paid a bunch of dough for the EMC's and can not get away from them.

Oh, and by the way, are there dual chipset NICs on MAC Xserve? If so are they both GigE?

Thanks

His scanning program, VueScan, is highly respected worldwide, amazing, powerful and inexpensive! A great story in itself and I think he would be a wonderful and very fascinating future guest on The Tech Night Owl Live. He's constantly hard at work updating VueScan and is now supporting Multi-Core & Multi-Processor systems to improve the speed of scans by 50%! Yep, it's for Mac OS X, Windows & Linux. Back in 2005, he incorporated Optical Character Recognition (OCR) capability that enables users to scan and process text as well as scan graphics within one application. The standard edition is only $39.95 with free upgrades for 1 full year and the Professional version is only $79.99 with free lifetime upgrades! Single-user licenses may be used by one person on four computers or multiple people on one computer. If you buy a new scanner in the future, you can use VueScan with it for no extra charge and you won't need to use a new program with your new scanner. Oh, and if you didn't know it supports 750 scanners! It's almost like a swiss army knife of scanning software. :D BTW another interesting tidbit: Hamrick Software was founded in Phoenix, Arizona in 1991 by Ed Hamrick. Hmm, I wonder if he's near Gene? ;)
If Mr. Hamrick has been on the show before I'm sorry if I missed his spot but if not then what the heck I think he'd enjoy it & so would we. :)
Here's a link to his site and an interview: http://www.hamrick.com/index.html http://www.hamrick.com/files/qanda.pdf

I was so hoping that Mr. Marken was going to take the opportunity last week on the show to announce a solid date for the update to Dragon Burn or a new version. Why? It has yet to run, properly or at all, on Intel Macs. It's not Universal Binary yet and thats very annoying to many folks out there that really liked Dragon Burn, such as myself. :) Especially as a less expensive, full featured alternative to Roxio's Toast with Dragon Flix. I hope NTI's Shadow works in Gene's tests but on NTI's website it shows that it too isn't for Intel processors yet but is for Panther or later. So I'm wondering about it working at all on the not so new Intel Macs and with Time Machine and Time Capsule. Will it run properly in Rosetta? Or will it slow things down? Like I implied earlier they have great products but they also need to invest more in their R&D since as we all know Macs are selling like hot cakes! :D
Hmm, this is what I saw online for Shadow and similar requirements for the Dragon Suite :
"MAC Hardware Requirements
Macintosh computer with Power PC processor.
128 MB of RAM.
Software Requirements
Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later"

I really enjoyed the David Biedny Zone in which Gene and David discussed the "'Net Neutrality" issue and the "Internet Pipes" analogy. :D
If you haven't done this topic as a roundtable issue I think this would be a great one to throw out there to see what your friends and experts think about this and the future of the "pipe(s)" and the 'Net Neutrality issue.
Thanks!

Perceptive Automation's Indigo is a cool app for Home Automation for the Mac and I believe that Mr. Bendiksen or a representative would be a great new guest for Gene to have on the show. Or someone from the Mac Home Store or both! Ha-Ha! Unless, they were on before and I missed that episode! :( If so then how about another round? ;)
Home automation using your Mac, iPhone & iPod Touch? Hmm, sounds very interesting and not to mention cool!! :D Just sounds like a great topic and right on the money for a great Tech Night Owl Live episode. :)
Curious? Indigo:http://www.perceptiveautomation.com/ MacHomeStore:http://www.machomestore.com/

Paul Thurrott sez: "Long lines at Apple Store Grand Openings make me uneasy"

Paul Thurrott: "Long lines at Apple Store Grand Openings make me uneasy." Hmm, I just read this on one of the many Mac websites about Paul and it makes me wonder how you guys, gals and 'other beings' feel? Whoops! Sorry bout the 'other beings' I thought there for a moment I was on the Paracast forums! LOL ;)
Here's the gist of what he posted:
"My mother in law actually called me yesterday to find out if I was going to the opening of the Boston Apple Store, a question that left me speechless for a few uncomfortable seconds while I pondered a reply. Mentioning this to my wife later, she noted that she was surprised I didn't go. When pressed by what she meant by that, she said, and I quote, 'you enjoy that nerdy carnival atmosphere,'" Paul Thurrott writes for Windows IT Pro. (AKA: winsupersite.com)
"Certainly, I've gone to my share of Apple events, standing in line a like a goof and interacting with the local Mac population... They're usually a good time and a chance to interact with people who are passionate about technology but not overly aggressive like the fanboys you run into online," Thurrott writes. "Still, I have this vague notion that waiting in line for a retail store to open for the first time is one of many small steps down the road to the collapse of Western civilization, and for this reason the whole thing makes me uneasy."
Gene, David anyone else what do you think? :)
I will say that I see his point but from what I've heard and never yet attended the Apple Store Grand Openings are events and not like Wally-Worlds with a generic sale. :(

Hi Gene, sorry if I posted this in the wrong category but anyways I wonder if you might consider having or entertaining the idea of asking and hopefully landing Paul Thurrott as a guest in the near future? I see, from my limited reading & such, that Paul may be your alter ego so to speak. ;) If you're wondering who's Paul? He's the man behind the "SuperSite for Windows" and the "Windows Weekly" Podcast.
How did this come to a head? I suppose now a former listener of The Tech Night Owl Live, and a good friend of mine Randy, told me he wasn't going to listen to your show since you "bash Microsoft/Windows" way too much. But Paul bashes Macs and other Apple products and services and you guessed it, Randy is a big fan of his. Oh, yeah Randy is a Windoze user. ;) From time to time Randy sends me posts related to Apple from Paul's site and they're aggravating since even though Randy claims he's neutral I don't think so! LOL
Either way it would be interesting to see if he would say yes and what would be the topics at hand.
Thanks!
Uncle Mac :D
